How to create a Virtual Tour
In this page, the steps towards creating a virtual tour are explained. You can use a virtual tour to 'replace' an excursion or field trip, as is done in this showcase. You can also use a virtual tour to show others a specific location, such as a lab, a greenhouse or a recording studio.
In this article:
Making a plan
As with any type of video or media content, you start with making a plan. In this plan you give answers to the following questions: At what location do you want to record? How far apart do you want the different points to be located? How many points do you estimate to have? What do you want the students to see at the different points.
A virtual tour consists of 360 degree photo's that are linked together. In each 360 degree picture, students (viewers) can look around. Within the photo they can click on things for extra information. This extra information can be in the form of a video, a photo, text, or it can be a short quiz. From each 360 degree photo, the students can move forward to the next photo, or for instance go back to a map, from which they can access different locations or rooms.
Try to make a logical flow from location to location. For instance, go around in the same order as you would when you would do the field trip, or pretend as if you are walking through the building that you are trying to capture. And if you want to make pictures or short video's at the certain locations, you can consider to make them at the same time that you make the 360 degree photo.
Making the 360 degree photos
To do this, you need a camera that is suitable for making this type of images. You can borrow this camera, you can request it at [email protected]. The camera that you can borrow is a INSTA360 One R. It is a camera that is very easy to handle and use. You can find a manual that we have written in the attachment.
The manual does not only help you with setting up the camera, but also to save the images into a usable format for creating the virtual tour.
In case you are using this camera and a tripod, you could also use the camera to make short video clips and to make regular images.
Creating the virtual tour
For the virtual tour, you can use one of the products of H5P. This is an external tool that is integrated in Brightspace. Here you can find the page on how to set up this tool in your Brightspace course. As you will see, there are many different 'content types' that they offer. To create the virtual tour, you will have to select the content type: "Virtual Tour (360)".
On how to go through the different steps on creating this tour, we recommend you to visit the H5P webpage where they have a tutorial on how to make a virtual tour.
Once you have made the plan, the images and have walked through the tutorial, you are ready to start creating your own virtual tour.
In case you have some questions regarding the creation of a virtual tour with 360 degree images and H5P, you can always contact the educational media team. They are happy to help you and to think along with you.
