Tips for filming with your webcam

Image

Recording interviews via a webcam comes with some restrictions. Mainly because the interviewer and interviewee are not in the same room. You can overcome this by using three positions (this can be used for both interviewer and interviewee).

  1. Use a Medium Close Up. This is a framing where the speaker is visible from head to shoulders, like the picture below:
  1. If you position someone further away from the webcam, a bigger part of the speaker is visible, but it can give some problems with audio recording.

Important is that the speaker is always speaking diagonally towards the side with the most space. In the picture above you see that both speakers are turned towards the side with the most space: the woman sits on the left and looks to the right and the man sits on the right and looks to the left.

  1. A third option is to position someone in the center of the image and speak directly towards the camera. This person could for example ask questions, which is answered by multiple people in a row. This way you create a visual difference between the interviewer and the interviewees.

Audio

Recording audio for a webcam-clip is possible in multiple ways. We have listed the options from most qualitative to least qualitative.

  1. External microphone. If you have an external microphone (vlog-microphone) that you can connect to your computer, this will give you the best audio for your video.
  2. External recorder. If you have an audio recorder, for example a ‘zoom’, you can use this to record high quality audio. However, you will have a separate audio clip, which you will have to synchronize with your video. It is important to give the audio- and video clips recognizable names, so that later it is clear which audio clip belongs to which video clip.
  3. Headset/Headphones with microphone. This is the same equipment you might use for a video call or online gaming. You can also use this to record you audio. Of course you will have to wear the headset while filming, which might not be the ‘look’ you want to go for.
  4. Smartphone audio recorder. Smartphones often have an audio-recorder, or you can download an app for this. You can use this to record your audio clips. If you use this, make sure you hold the microphone of your smartphone close to your mouth and pointing towards your mouth. Make sure you give the files a recognizable name, like mentioned at ‘external recorder’.
  5. Build-in microphone of your computer. If none of the above is possible, you can record your audio directly with your computer. This form of recording is very sensitive to (background) noise. When using this, make the distance between you and your computer as small as possible, you speak clearly and are in a silent room.

Whichever form of recording you choose, find a silent room for you recording, always be sure to articulate clearly and don’t talk to softly or to fast. Try to talk naturally and with pitches to make your story lively and not a flat summary.

As a final tip: when in doubt, make an extra recording. Better to have one to many then to discover afterwards that it could be better ;).
