Introduction

Welcome to our Screencast Studio! Here you will make your own screencast video’s by using the software Camtasia.

We provide this manual to give you a quick and easy start in making your first recording. You will learn how to record, edit and export a video with Camtasia. Besides that we will show you different possibilities. For example recording a PowerPoint presentation or a voice-over and adding annotations and effects.

Before Recording

Short checklist to start in our Screencast Studio:

  1. Switch on the extension cord underneath the table.
  2. Power on the computer.
  3. Login with the STUDI106 account. You can find the password behind you on the wall.
  4. Powerup RodeCaster.

On the RodeCaster, make sure you have the right audio input and output. Each microphone has a slider to adjust the input volume and a mute-button. Each headphones has a rotary knob to adjust the volume.

If you record only one voice, use microphone 1. Check if microphone 1 is unmuted (red light out) and mute microphone 2,3 and 4.

Using the Camtasia Template

On the desktop you will find a template for Camtasia. This template automatically gives you the WUR layout. Open NEW_WUR_CAMTASIA_TEMPLATE2 from the desktop.

The home page is opened with the WUR intro bumper already in place. On the home page you find; the menu with all the options; the canvas where you will view your recording; the timeline and, on the timeline, the WUR intro bumper.

Using PowerPoint in your Recording

In the following example we will use a PowerPoint presentation in the recording.

  • Open PowerPoint from the Windows Start menu.
  • Open your PowerPoint presentation.

If an USB is used, click on ‘Open Other Presentation’ at the bottom of the list.

  • Set the PowerPoint in ‘full screen’ or ‘play’ modus.

It can be helpful to put the PowerPoint presentation on the left monitor.

Prepare Recording

  • Before you start the recording, position the microphone right in front of your mouth.

The microphone is very sensitive, so normal conversation volume will be sufficient during the recording. But keep the microphone very close to your mouth, if you move away you can hear the volume drop very quickly.

When everything is ready, you can start the recording.

  • Go back to Camtasia
  • Click the Record button on the top left of the screen

Recording

Starting the Recording

After clicking the Record button, the following operation bar will appear. The recording will not have begun yet.

Automatically the full screen will be selected for recording, indicated by the dotted line on the left monitor. You can change the area by using the Custom settings. Either type in the preferred dimensions, or drag the box with the dotted line on your monitor.

Next to the Custom screen settings, you find the option to turn off/on the webcam and audio and a slider to adjust the volume of the audio.

  • Turn the webcam on if you want to use it
  • Turn audio on

Are you sitting comfortably? Let’s start the recording.

  • Click the big red ‘rec’ button to start the recording

During the Recording

Once the count down has finished, the recording has started.

Now you can start talking. PowerPoint can be operated as usual during the recording.

  • Use your mouse or keyboard to navigate the PowerPoint slides while talking

During the recording, the operation bar will be visible on the right monitor. Here you can see the duration of your recording and pause or stop the recording.

  • When you are done recording, click the Stop button or press F10 on your keyboard

Your recording will be showed in the Media Bin in Camtasia.

  • Go back to Camtasia and click on ‘Media’

Basic Editing

Adding your Recording to the Timeline

In Camtasia you will find your recording in the Media Bin. It will have the name ‘Rec’ + today's date. Next to the name you can see the duration of the recording.

Now you have to add the recording to the timeline.

  • Drag the recording from the Media Bin to the Timeline, after the WUR Intro Bumper

In this case you see two tracks: Track 1 contains the screen (in this case the PowerPoint) and Track 2 contains the webcam footage with the audio.

It is possible to edit the audio separately from the video, but for now keep them together.

Next we need to add the WUR Outro to the end of the clip. In the Media Bin you find three Outro’s. If your recording is a regular WUR recording, use the ‘2019 WUR Bumper Outtro’. If your recording is part of a MOOC, use the ‘MOOC WUR Bumper Outtro’.

  • Drag the correct outro on the timeline, after your own recording

By clicking the play button, or pressing spacebar, you can watch your video.

Editing your Recording

Sometimes you make mistakes while recording. You can cut these out afterwards. However, this will take some time, so it might be easier to redo the take or leave some small mistakes in.

  • Drag the ‘playhead’ to the beginning of the part you want to remove
  • Select the clip(s) you want to cut
  • Press ‘S’ (from ‘Split’) on your keyboard

The clip will now be split in two

  • Drag the side of the clip to remove the part you don’t want

Or make another Split with ‘S’

  • Drag the second part of the clip to the left to remove the gap.

In order to keep your audio & webcam footage in sync with your screen (PowerPoint), you must select both tracks at once before splitting them and again before dragging!

Selection Audio Output

The audio will be heard on the headphones or the speaker. In the Windows Taskbar you will find the audio sources that can be selected.

  • Click on the speakers icon  in the bottom-right corner of the screen
  • Click on the white arrow to open the options
  • Select the preferred audio output
    • Headphones = ‘RODECaster Pro Stereo’
    • Speakers = ‘Realtek High Definition Audio’

Change Audio Levels

In the timeline you can change the audio levels of your clips. First you have to put the audio on a separate track.

  • Select the clip with the webcam footage and audio
  • Right-click and select ‘Separate Audio and Video’

Now on Track 3 you will have your audio track.

  • Select the clip of which you want to change the audio levels
  • Drag the green line up or down to increase or decrease the audio levels

In the next chapter you can learn how to add effects to your screencast that can improve your video. If you are happy with your video as it is, you can skip to chapter 6 to start exporting your video.

Adding Effects

In the menu on the left of the screen you will find a lot of possibilities to bring your screencast to the next level.

Take a look at the options and see how these effects can enhance your video, without causing distractions. If you try an effect and don’t like it, you can undo it with CTRL+Z on the keyboard.

Annotations

Annotations can be used to emphasize or explain certain points on your screen. For example you can use an arrow to make clear where the viewer should be looking, or you can add an box with a short text.

  • Select Annotations from the menu
  • Select the annotation you want to use and drag it to the timeline, to the track above the clip of your recording.
  • Drag it in the timeline, to time it with your recording.
  • Position the annotation by dragging it to it’s correct position on the canvas.
  • Double-click on the annotation on the canvas, to change the text

To the right of the canvas you can find the properties panel of the selected annotation. Here you can color, size and more.

  • With the annotation selected, change it’s properties to your preference.

Transitation

In the transitions menu you can find all sorts of transitions which you can add between slides or clips on your timeline.

Behaviors

Behaviors can be used to add animation to something. Drag it on to a clip in the timeline.

Animations

With animations you can address something specific in your recording. Drag it onto a clip in the timeline. You will see an arrow appear, which you can use to manipulate the animation.

Cursor Effects

If the position of your cursor is important, you can add cursor effects to draw attention. Drag it on to the screen-capture (PowerPoint) track. In the menu on the right you can change the size and color.

Voice Narration

If you want to record only your voice, without the screen, you can use Voice Narration. This can be useful to record a voice-over for an existing video or if you need new audio for a certain part of your screencast.

Select ‘Voice Narration’

  • In the timeline, move to beginning of your video, or to the part you want to start the narration.
  • You can paste the script in the box in Camtasia, or have it opened on another monitor.
  • Click on ‘Start Voice Recording’

The video will now play while you are recording the voice-over.

  • When you are done, click on ‘Stop’
  • Save the file in the folder you created for your project

The narration will now have appeared on the timeline, as well as in the Media Bin.

Audio Effects

The audio effects can be dragged to the audio layer in the timeline. But if you recorded in the Screencast Studio, your audio will already be pretty good!

Visual Effects

Under Visual Effects you will find options like color adjustment, clip speed and interactive hotspots.

Exporting

Now that your video is finished, you are ready to export it.

  • Click the green Share button in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Select Custom Production
  • Select WUR Knowledgeclip Export
  • In the pop-up menu, under ‘Production Name’, give your video a title

Next you need to select the right folder, where your video will be saved.

  • Click on the folder icon
  • Brows to ‘Desktop’ ‘CAMTASIA opnames’
  • Create a new folder and name it after the project you are working on
  • Click ‘save’ to save your video to the folder
  • Click on Finish

Now wait until your video is done rendering.

Congratulations! You now have you own Screencast video. You can find in in the ‘CAMTASIA opnames’ folder on the desktop.

  • Send your video to yourself via e-mail or copy it to an USB-storage
