Digital Accessibility | How to use Readspeaker

ReadSpeaker is one of the external learning tools that are integrated into Brightspace. ReadSpeaker is a text-to-speech solution that converts written content created in Brightspace into audio directly within the platform. It provides students with improved accessibility, allowing them to listen to course materials, enhancing comprehension and supporting diverse learning needs.

Accessing ReadSpeaker

Readspeaker can be accessed in two different ways:

1. HTML Content, Quizzes, and Discussion Forums

  1. Open an HTML content (as shown in the following example), Quiz or Discussion forum
  1. Once you have clicked on Listen in the ReadSpeaker toolbar, the toolbar expands to show the following options:
1. webReader menu
  1. Settings: customize reading speed, highlighting, font face and size, colors and more
  2. Reading Voice: select the voice you wish to hear
  3. Click and Listen: click on the material to be read
  4. Enlarge Text: see larger font text at bottom of the page
  5. Text Mode: plain text format for distraction-free reading
  6. Page Mask: scrollable shaded screen for focus
  7. Download mp3: download audio to listen offline
  8. Help: easy to understand instruction by Readspeaker
  1. Listen
  2. Play/Resume
  3. Stop
  4. Skip backward (5 sec)
  5. Skip forward (5 sec)
  6. Volume
  7. Reading speed
  8. Close player

2. Documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint)

  1. Open a PDF, Word document or PowerPoint in the course
  1. Scroll down below the document and click Open with docReader
  1. The document will open in a new ReadSpeaker docReader window with the following options:
  1. Show/hide sidebar
  2. Previous
  3. Next
  4. Page number
  5. Listen
  6. Pause
  7. Stop
  8. Skip backward (5 sec)
  9. Skip forward (5 sec)
  10. Layout mode
  11. Text mode
12.Expand toolbar
  1. Settings: customize reading speed, highlighting, font face and size, colors and more.
  2. Page Mask: scrollable shaded screen for focus.
  3. Reading Ruler:a scrolling horizontal bar that covers the material below it.
  4. Download Document
